HAYATILAH SECEBIS KESAH

JOHOR BARU: Most seven-year-old boys would be looking forward to
starting Year One in primary school, but this is not the case for
Muhammad Muharriz Halil.

Muhammad Muharriz, the second of three brothers, has been blind from
birth and is unable to speak or even walk properly.

He refuses to eat most types of food, resulting in him being physically weak.

Extreme handicap: Muhammad Muharriz has been blind from birth and is
unable to speak or even walk prop erly.
His mother Hamimah Zakaria, 33, said she had brought her son to three
hospitals, but the doctors were unable to determine what was wrong
with him.

“He used to be healthy and able to walk when he was four, but by the
time he was six, something happened and now he can barely crawl.

“My son cannot communicate properly either and will cry when he’s
hungry or he has defecated,” she said at her flat at Taman Desa Rakyat
Perdana in Pasir Gudang yesterday.

She added that she had tried to enrol him in SKPK Princess Elizabeth
here which offers education for visually-impaired students.

However, the school could not accept him because he was unable to be
independent.

State Welfare Department deputy director Bazlan Ismail said it would
look into the matter and would help the boy.

“Since he is blind, he is eligible for a disabled person’s allowance
of RM150 a month,” he said, adding that the department officers would
need to verify Muhammad Muharriz’s condition.
